During the long days of waiting, these four teenagers become friends, argue, console each other, and share their stories. Leopold, the narrator, was taken in by a Russian friend of his parents, who were Jewish activists.
Marie Antoinette escaped from the Beaune-la-Rolande internment camp thanks to a magic trick performed by her father. André, a young virtuoso pianist, was sent to the United States before the war and has had no news of his family. As for Michel, he doesn't understand why his mother was arrested since "she's not even Jewish."
Together, they will gradually learn to accept the unacceptable, mourn their lost loved ones, begin to rebuild their lives and move forward.

Key features:
The theme: resilience.
The point of view: the fate of the hidden Jewish children who waited, most often in vain, for the return of their parents.
The period: the immediate post-war period.
The location: “Le Lutetia”, this Parisian luxury hotel which served as a reception center for deportees who survived the Nazi concentration camps after the Liberation.
The language: Rachel Corenblit's writing is beautiful, powerful and moving.
The tone: Without compromise or sentimentality, by turns funny, tender, fierce, and moving.
The characters: Real, vibrant, touching, and relatable. It's easy for the reader to identify with these rebellious teenagers and
unhappy, desperate, and yet driven by a fierce desire to live.

A powerful book for learning, understanding, sharing, feeling, and not forgetting.
